By The Offspring

What happened en route, as Brewer described it, resembled the fate of Tunstall. Morton had reached over, grabbed his friend McCloskey’s pistol and shot him dead, then with Frank Baker made a break for safety. Brewer and his men pursued and quickly shot the two from their horses. Casting doubt on the story was the fact that each body bore eleven bullet holes, one for each member of the posse. As surely as Tunstall, Morton had been murdered. Billy Bonney was later named as the man who first shot Morton.

Frank Coe, a neighbor and friend of Roberts on the Ruidoso, persuaded Brewer to delay while he tried to convince Buckshot to surrender. Outside, Coe met Roberts approaching the front door. They shook hands, then returned to the west porch to sit in front of the door to Blazer’s office. Despite Coe’s assurance that he would guarantee Roberts’s safety if he gave up his carbine, he stubbornly resisted. “No,” replied Roberts, according to Coe, “never alive. ” “I’ll stand by you,” promised Coe, to no avail.
