His reason for wanting to marry this young woman was not because she was disabled but because she had been rejected as a ‘cripple’, and in a church of all places.

At this time, Alsace, together with the neighbouring region of Lorraine, was part of the German Reich and a pawn in the growing conflict with France. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1, this region fell to the Reich and would remain part of Germany until after the First World War.
