We sold jewellery for men, got knitwear designer Betty Barnden to make sweaters featuring people’s faces taken from photographs – very popular with pop stars – and wild designer Fred Spurr, one of the Royal College of Art’s most talented students, designed black plastic PVC jumpsuits covered in battery-operated light bulbs.
They went in and out of business, lurching from one drama to another, and I cared passionately throughout it all. I worked with many of the major international designer names over the years including Donna Karan, Romeo Gigli, Jean Paul Gaultier, Edina Ronay, John Galliano, Jasper Conran, Calvin Klein and Ghost. Creative, stimulating individuals, most of them could laugh at themselves and at the insane system we were part of. Beautiful clothes and sensual fabrics are enjoyable to wear as well as to design.
