Brigit Patmore thought him snappy and lacking in humility, though capable of winning cordiality; Vivienne, it seemed, 'shimmered with intelligence'. She recalled how the Eliots danced on Sunday afternoons at a hall in Queensway, but found they now took everything with 'a terrible seriousness'. To The Waste Land 21 It explained, she thought, why Vivienne said with a sigh , 'The frightful time I have with Tom'. He was in his thirtieth year (much younger than Prufrock), and talked about how old he was; yet his wife could move him to gaiety at times , 'even with a schoolboy sense of humour' .
In the first number his editing is restricted to a few notes; the practice of giving abstracts of foreign periodi cals (only French, German and American initially) began with the third; and brief editorial notes (one from Aldington) concluded the fourth. Eliot attempts to define the function of a literary review; it is not 'to provide material for the chat of coteries' but to 'maintain the application, in literature, of principles which have their consequences also in politics and in private conduct' , and to do this without allowing any confusion between them .
The appearance of 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' and other poems by Eliot in a 1915 anthology edited by Pound had been the occasion for a traditional attack on the two American poets by Arthur Waugh in The Critical Quarterly of October 1916. Poetry was threatened with anarchy by the 'unmetrical, incoherent banalities' of these emancipated literary 'Cubists'. Recalling the classic custom of safeguarding the behaviour of household sons by exposing an inebriated slave when the feast was at its height, he risked his feeble wit by branding Eliot a 'drunken helot' whose example would save Georgian poets from catastrophe.
