The officers of the colony had a head start in trade, though they were soon joined by enterprising ex-convicts and ambitious younger men lured from mercantile operations in other parts of the British Empire by fresh opportunity.

The governor used freely his prerogative to pardon convicts for good conduct; he continued to provide them with grants of land on the expiry of their sentences, and he favoured their agriculture over the pastoral interests of the large landowners. Macquarie was especially indulgent towards educated and suc­ cessful emancipists such as the surgeon William Redfern, the archi­ tect Francis Greenway, the merchant Simeon Lord and the poet laureate Michael Robinson.
